Originally a roman cemetery, the area is named after england’s largest medieval hospital and priory, founded in 1197 and known as st mary’s spital. Despite such early beginnings most buildings in the area date from the mid 17th century post the Great Fire of London. The original Spitalfield’s vegetable market was established in the 1680s, and has since moved further East. These days, stallholders are a vibrant mix of food producers, antiques specialists and fashion designers. Spitalfields lies at the heart of the East End, an area of constant change and great diversity, besides some great Georgian architectural gems. These days its renown for its thriving arts scene. Canteen were one of the first eateries to move into the Sir Norman Foster’s new market building.
