Historically, the south bank always had pleasure gardens, of somewhat dubious repute. It’s now a veritable hub of cultural entertainment especially music, art, film and theatre including daily free promenade performances. The Royal Festival Hall, built on the site of the Red Lion brewery, is the only permanent legacy of the 1951 Festival of Britain and looking better than ever, newly restored to its full modernist glory. The Millennium Bridge makes it possible to easily reach the South Bank from the City. Besides the London Eye, the world’s highest observation wheel, the South Bank Centre, Europe’s largest arts venue, is a fabulous day out for all the family
What to do close by: Screen heaven at bfi London IMAX cinema plus The National Film Theatre; Museum of Garden History; Hayward Gallery on the doorstop and a brisk stroll to The Tate Modern.
